Counselling

We have realized that it is very useful to talk to students on a one-to-one basis. Talking to students individually helps us to advise him/her accordingly.

We find that these sessions have been very useful and we are now able to point out where the student needs to improve and suggest him accordingly. Feedback is encouraged. Individual students are met in the presence of the coordinator and the volunteers. The coordinator has to follow-up on the student depending on the suggestions made to them.

Discussions with each student individually helped us to understand that the students lacked time management skills and had irregular patterns of studying.

Hence the students were given the following tips:

  • Preparation of a daily timetable to analyze free time available for studies..
  • Preparation of a systematic study time table segregating the subject chapterwise and allocation of time for individual subjects.
  • Time management skills.
  • Planning the number of revisions required
  • Time frame to complete the portions.

We also advise students not to work but study as this affects their performance in the studies. Though part-time jobs lure these students with the monetary benefits, students lose concentration on studies and the students’ percentage decreases.

Counseling is held thrice a year for each student. The first round of counseling commences in July each year, II round in September and the III round in October. Regular counselors of Prerana or Volunteers, who opt for counseling, regularly interact with students. Each counseling session typically lasts for 30-45 minutes per student and students share their concerns, worries, study hours, problems, if any. Many students respond positively and benefit from such sessions. About 60% of students benefit greatly from repeated counseling sessions. About 25% of them just need consoling, a pat on the back or just a few tips to be on the road to success again.
